Why Smart Leaders Freeze, Snap, or Overcommit... and How to Change It

The last training I attended as an employee is the reason I walked away from a six figure salary and 14 weeks of vacation.

It was two hours on how to read a color coded report. Thirty of us sat together to learn something a child could figure out: red means alert, yellow means proceed with caution, green means good to go. Meanwhile our inboxes were overflowing and our desks were buried.

And here's what I need you to know. I respected these leaders. They were kind, caring, hardworking, and genuinely passionate about the work we did together. So why would they spend the only two hours of real collaboration we had that month on the obvious?

Because overwhelmed people reach for what feels safe. A simple training you can manage start to finish is safe. Naming the actual overload we were all under, the workload none of us could get ahead of is hard because there is no easy fix for it. That is not bad leadership. It is a nervous system under strain doing the most logical thing it knows, which is to shrink the problem down to something it can control.

Maybe you have never sat in a training like that. But you know this move. It is reorganizing your files when you should be following up on the invoice. It is redesigning your website for the third time instead of making the offer or asking for help. When you work for yourself, you are the leader making the decision and the one who pays for it.

I did not have language for dysregulated decision making then. I do now, and that is what I want to share with you.

In this session, you will learn how your nervous system shapes the way you decide, communicate, and perform when the stakes are high. We will look at how regulating your nervous system will help you read and respond to challenges with clarity rather than chaos.  You will take part in a short experience built to help you work through a decision you are sitting with right now. And you will leave with three research-based strategies to steady yourself in the moments that matter most, whether that is a pitch, a hard conversation with a contractor or client, or a choice about where to take your business next.

What you'll walk away with

  • A clearer sense of how your nervous system drives your decisions, communication, and performance.
  • An understanding of how nervous system regulation and relational intelligence connect, and how to use both toward your goals.
  • A live experience to help you make a decision you have been wrestling with.
  • Three research-based strategies to regulate your nervous system.

Bring a friend, a journal, and a problem you are wrestling with. See you soon!

Founder

Dr. Stephanie Bacon is the founder of Stephanie Bacon, PhD: Nervous System Based Leadership, where she provides regulation and relational experiences that change outcomes for leaders, teams, and organizations. Her work is built on a simple but disruptive premise: if the outcomes in an organization depend on humans, then physiology matters.

Stephanie's niche is not a single industry. It is her methodology. She helps leaders and teams see how stress, burnout, conflict, avoidance, turnover, and initiative fatigue are often driven by nervous system patterns, not by a lack of effort, intelligence, or commitment. She teaches people how to move out of fight-or-flight reactivity and into the parts of the brain responsible for clarity, creativity, connection, accountability, and problem-solving.
